Railcars we repair in the field

Apache’s mobile crews are equipped to handle common repairs on tank cars, boxcars, gondolas, and flatcars. These cover the majority of field service needs, from brake shoe replacements and coupler swaps to welding and inspections.

More specialized work, such as covered hopper gates or full change-of-service prep, is performed at our Snowflake shop. Mobile crews focus on the essential running repairs that get cars back in service quickly and safely.

Service Capabilities

Apache’s mobile crews perform a wide range of field repairs, including running gear replacement, coupler swaps, brake shoe replacement, weld repairs, inspections, and stenciling. While mobile teams can handle many issues in the field, cars that need extensive work are directed to our shop in Snowflake.

A repair can start in the field and then be completed in the shop if required—but never the other way around. Shop work stays in the shop. All mobile work is coordinated by the shop manager to ensure consistency with Apache’s quality standards.

Equipment & Readiness

Our crews operate from fully equipped trucks stocked with welding rigs, air brake testing kits, and the most common replacement parts. We pre-plan jobs to bring the right parts the first time, reducing downtime and avoiding repeat trips.

Mobile units are available during business hours, with emergency calls handled on a one-day response basis. While crews can only support one job at a time, Apache’s scheduling system ensures customers get fast, documented service when it’s needed most.

Geographic Coverage

Mobile repair services extend across northeastern Arizona, reaching shippers within a 200-mile radius of Snowflake. While most work is local, crews can occasionally be dispatched into Utah or New Mexico when conditions warrant.

For regional industries without direct access to a repair shop, Apache’s field crews offer a cost-effective alternative that minimizes downtime and transportation costs.

Documentation & Compliance

All mobile repair work is documented through FRA forms, inspection reports, and service certificates. Customers receive repair documentation directly, and records are retained by Apache for audits.

Post-repair inspections are conducted by trained personnel, ensuring cars repaired in the field meet the same standards as shop work. Customers also receive status updates by phone or email as jobs progress.

Pricing & Value

Mobile railcar repair is priced competitively, with charges based on hourly rates, mileage, and parts. Customers avoid the higher costs of pulling cars into shops for minor repairs, making Apache’s field service an economical choice.

The value goes beyond cost: proximity, response time, and integration with our shop set Apache apart from national providers. Customers know that the same technicians who handle mobile work also handle shop repairs, creating consistency across the fleet.

Railcar Cleaning Methods

The Apache Railway Company uses multiple cleaning methods depending on car type and service history.

  • Wet and dry cleaning
  • Steam cleaning
  • Hand cleaning
  • Media blasting
  • Flare service

All cleaning work is documented for compliance with EPA, FRA, EPA and ADEQ regulations.
